1893 Surcharge

With the reduction in the foreign letter rate from 8c to 5c and no 5c stamp available, the 1892 Pictorial Issue 6c stamp was surcharged to 5c.

Varieties

Most of the varieties are fairly easy to distinguish but some people get confused about the "short" flags. Here is a comparison scan. The 5 on the left has the normal flag. The stamp on the right has the short flag.

• Missing Dot Over i in Five - This occurs in position 30 in the sheet of 40.
• One Short Flag - This occurs in position 16 in the sheet of 40.
• Two Short Flags - This occurs in positions 24 and 32 in a sheet of 40.
• Fives in Different Fonts - This occurs in position 40 in a sheet of 40.
• Broken e - This occurs in position 5 in a sheet of 40.
• Damaged e - This occurs in position 14 in a sheet of 40.
• Damaged C - This occurs in position 21 in a sheet of 40.
• Thin dot over i - This occurs in position 25 in a sheet of 40.
• Broken n - This occurs in position 29 in a sheet of 40.
• Broken dot - This occurs in position 33 in a sheet of 40.
• Broken v - This occurs in position 37 in a sheet of 40.
